The Classic was originally designed around our unique one-piece collapsible truss system. It is a “craftsman’s take” on the traditional truss style telescope with an easier, more convenient way to set-up and break down the scope.
Over the years, our design has evolved to include unique aluminum crescent bearings, a lower center of gravity, and an improved flotation mirror cell that ensures the mirror is properly supported not only from beneath, but also on the oft neglected edge.
Some of our recent updates include a switch to premium furniture-grade plywoods. We’ve discovered beautiful furniture-grade birch plywood that is void-free and extremely stable. The resulting finish is smoother and produces a greater depth of figure than traditional baltic birch. We continue to utilize finger joints to mate the mirror and rocker boxes, resulting in as strong a hardwood frame as is possible.
We continue to utilize boundary layer fans, mounted with an on/off switch. An optional fan mounted underneath the mirror cell is also available.
Mirror cells on scopes from 12”-14” are 9-point true flotation, while 15”- 24” models are 18-point true flotation- all with cable sling edge support. The cable is connected to linear bearings that have a vertical range of motion which adjust through collimation, keeping the portion of the sling in contact with the edge of the mirror in the same plane as the connection points. This assures your finely figured mirror will yield views free of astigmatism.
The upper cage is designed and built to shield ambient light. The focuser board is intentionally placed as low on the cage as possible, since it will most often be utilized with the light shroud around the truss. This ensures that light is less likely to creep over the top of the cage and wash out the view. A dual speed Moonlite focuser is a standard feature. We offer an upgrade to a Feathertouch focuser or a SIPS system as an available option.
Our original collapsible truss system is still utilized to connect the ring to the mirror box. All components are precisely machined from 1/8” aluminum stock then powder-coated and hammered black to match the bearings. Large clamping hand knobs are used to fasten the truss both atop the mirror box and beneath the upper ring. All hardware is self-secured, so there are no parts to lose. The collapsible truss system itself is anodized / powder-coated black. The result is a system that has set the industry standard in terms of speed of set-up and take down, as well as ease of use.
